Christmas through the eyes of a child is magical. It sets the foundation for how we as adults often celebrate and appreciate the holidays as we grow older and have families of our own. I remember how as a child waited year after year for the count down to the holiday with one of the most cherished events being the decorating of our Christmas tree.

Decorating was not just a tradition; it was a spectacular event in my family. We would all settle in to unpacking all those carefully guarded glass ornaments. Each one had survived a long journey from Europe by my grandparents. And being raised in a European-American household, we had the most holiday spectacular ornaments!

Each of us all had our own favorites, but the squeals that erupted from hanging each one in the perfect spot on that tree was a shared enjoyment by all. These were special irreplaceable ornaments–all glass and all different in their sizes, shapes, and colors. We had many different kinds of ornaments, but the fruit and nut ornaments carried a special weight in our family. My grandmother explained each year how they were a symbol of the types of Christmas gifts they would receive growing up. 

These ornaments were carefully preserved, as were the oral traditions of their history. And although they had started to show a bit of age as the years went on, they continue to be magnificent symbols of our tradition, memories, and love for the holidays. 

Many years after my grandparents had passed on, we had some work completed on the old family home that we had moved in to. Unfortunately, after the work was completed, the Christmas ornaments were nowhere to be found when the holidays came. Heartbroken, these ornaments were nowhere to be found.

I set out to recreate those designs from long ago to pass down to my children and their children as a cherished heirloom. Inspired by my European heritage and my lifetime experience working for some of the world’s elite, Kenzies of London was created.
